Local pet food company commits to covering injured puppy’s surgical bills.

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 26, 2013) – A local St. Louis company has committed to covering the surgical expenses of a puppy found shot Wednesday in the House Springs, Mo. area.

The puppy, named Dodger, was found dragging himself along Highway 30 Wednesday afternoon. Open Door Animal Sanctuary provided initial treatment before he was transported to Veterinary Specialty Services in Ballwin for surgery.

Nature’s Variety, a St. Louis-based pet food manufacturer, committed Thursday to covering Dodger’s surgical expenses. The independent company focuses its community support and outreach on no-kill shelters and pet-wellness causes.

“Our team at Nature’s Variety was deeply moved by Dodger’s story,” said Reed Howlett, Chief Executive of Nature’s Variety. “We felt compelled to act and bring about something positive from a terrible situation.”

Dodger is in stable condition and being monitored at Veterinary Specialty Services. Open Door is accepting donations from the community to help pay for Dodger’s follow-up care. Any additional donations will go directly to the Tom Cat’s Repair Fund, Open Door’s emergency vet fund to help companion animals like Dodger.

“Dodger has a long road ahead of him,” said Lindsey Burg, Director of Development for Open Door. “He will need water therapy to walk again along with other special care and treatment.

“We have been overwhelmed by the community’s outpouring of support,” Burg said. “Open Door is immensely grateful for the support Nature’s Variety is giving to help Dodger through his recovery. Their willingness to cover his mounting veterinary bills is a beautiful act of compassion.”
