Cats are fascinating and particular creatures. They’re also kind of hard to read, and this is something that either drives us crazy or we find charming.

Cats are often unpredictable, too – their behavior changing all too quickly. One moment they’re solitary and perfectly content lounging alone, and the next they’re social with other cats and other people. That’s probably why we love observing them.
Another thing that amuses us about cats is their penchant for hiding. They love getting into boxes, cabinets, drawers, shelves, bags, and even shoes. And they can also get extremely creative when it comes to finding their perfect hiding spot! No matter how small the space, they can somehow manage to squeeze in there.
So why is this?
Cats enjoy hiding in places where they can control and supervise their environment. They also hide in spots where they can escape from potential or real dangers.
If a cat hides somewhere for a brief period of time, there’s nothing to worry about. That’s just normal cat behavior. However, if they often hide for long periods, especially in high places, that may be a sign that a certain environmental factor is stressing them out.
Cats hide for two main reasons:
- They’re just looking for a quiet spot. Like all of us, cats also need some time to themselves. There are times when they just need to be alone in a comfortable place, away from the noise and where they can’t be disturbed.
- They’re seeking safety. Cats may look for a spot where they feel safe from something they find threatening. For example, they may perceive a guest in your house as a threat, so they would go to a spot where they think that person cannot reach them. Nevertheless, cats will make sure that they remain in control so that they can leave when they recover their sense of security.
Create safe shelters
Cats also love soft, comfortable, warm, and cozy spaces. They also love heights and they enjoy observing what’s going on around them from a vantage point. That’s why it is not surprising if you find them tucked under your sheets, perched on a high shelf, or sitting by the window.
However, bear in mind that not all places cats consider secure and adequate are actually safe spots for them. That’s why it’s important for cat owners to create spaces where your pets can hide, but not entirely out of view. It’s also important to make sure that your cats cannot access certain areas that are potentially hazardous. These include appliances like the dishwasher or washing machine, the garage where you keep your tools, or some cupboards or cabinets where you keep your cleaning products or your sharp kitchen implements. Moreover, keep your doors closed if you think it’s not safe for them to go outside. And if they have access to wherever you park your car, always make sure they’re not underneath it before you start moving; make some noise or bang a surface so they’ll get startled and run away.
To put things simply, let your cat roam free inside the house so they can hide whenever they like. At the same time, try to always be aware of their movements so you’ll always know where they are and so you can keep them from hiding in dangerous spots.
